Movie Classic Celebrated At Legendary San Diego Beach Resort

The Hotel del Coronado reels back 50 years to celebrate the debut of 1959 comedy Some Like It Hot. Directed by Billy Wilder and shot on location at The Del in 1958 and released the following year, the movie has since become a legend – voted the No. 1 comedy of all time by the American Film Institute.

• Friday, September 18
6pm – 9pm: CALLING ALL BAND FANS! 
Enjoy a fun-filled reception and chef’s tasting menu. Meet Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopators – the original girls in the band from Some Like It Hot. The evening will include a special cabaret performance with Broadway singer and performer Nancy Anderson, accompanied by Tom Lindblade on piano. A Marilyn Monroe look-alike will also be on hand for photo opportunities. Resort casual attire recommended. Cash bar.

Tickets for this event are $75 per person (includes tax and gratuity).

• Saturday, September 19
5pm – 6:45pm: BEHIND-THE-SCENES CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION.
Enjoy champagne, appetizers and meet Some Like It Hot producer Walter Mirisch and Laurence Maslon, author of the new book Some Like It Hot: The Official 50th Anniversary Companion. They will describe the making of this ground-breaking film, debunk myths and share hilarious tales. A book signing will follow.

7pm – 10pm: A NIGHT WITH TONY CURTIS. Reception and buffet dinner featuring classic menu items including some of Marilyn’s favorite dishes. Award-winning actor, author and artist Tony Curtis will recount the behind-the-scenes stories from the filming of Some Like It Hot and present a retrospective video of his career. The 25-minute movie montage weaves together a myriad of scenes from Curtis’s most acclaimed films, including Some Like It Hot, Spartacus, Houdini, The Defiant Ones, Operation Petticoat and many others. He will also have his books Tony Curtis: An American Prince, new release The Making of Some Like It Hot and artwork for sale. Cocktail attire recommended. Cash bar.

Tickets include both Saturday evening events and are $125 per person (includes tax and gratuity).

10am – 1pm: BOOK SIGNING WITH TONY CURTIS
Coronet Room (located just off the lobby)
Meet the legendary Tony Curtis in person! He will be selling and autographing his wonderful paintings, photo giclees, copies of his soon-to-be-released book The Making of Some Like It Hot, and his award-winning memoir American Prince.

Congratulations to Karla W. of Oklahoma City! She is the grand prize winner on the Some Like It Hot sweepstakes through HarperCollinsPublishers. Karla received two round-trip coach airline tickets (from anywhere in the continental United States) to San Diego the weekend of September 18, accommodations at the historic Hotel del Coronado for two nights, and two tickets to the weekend's exclusive events.

Five runner-up winners received one signed copy of Some Like It Hot: The Official 50th Anniversary Companion by Laurence Maslon.


NEW SOME LIKE IT HOT BOOK DEBUTS AT THE DEL

Some Like It Hot: The Official 50th Anniversary Companion(Collins Design, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers), is written by noted film and theater historian Laurence Maslon, associate professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and the author of two other theater/film companion books in the same series: The Sound of Music Companion and The South Pacific Companion. This exciting new book includes scores of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes photos and many images of vintage memorabilia. Also included are elements from drafts of the original screenplay, pre-production casting files, the production log, lyrics from the film’s songs, and much more.
